Another Decade Fast Approaches Completion
In just a few days, I’ll close out another decade—and honestly, I’m not quite sure how I feel about it.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately, reflecting back. I remember when my parents reached this age, and I thought, “Wow, they’re getting older.” And now, somehow, I’m here too.
I know I should feel incredibly lucky—because not everyone gets to make it this far. I live with that truth every day. My daughter will always be twenty. That reality humbles me and reminds me never to take time for granted.
Still, I step into this next decade with a bit of trepidation. I’m now well past middle age, and that brings a new kind of awareness. But I also know this: I need to keep pushing myself out of my comfort zone, keep seeking out new adventures, new challenges, new joys. Life is meant to be lived fully—right to the end.
The last ten years? They’ve been the best decade of my life.
I married Steve, who came into my life just when I needed someone kind, loving, and full of fun. We’ve had countless adventures together, and although we can drive each other mad sometimes, he’s my true soulmate.
We moved aboard Never Two Late, our beautiful narrowboat that we designed and had built to our own specs. It’s been more than a home—it’s a whole way of life. I wrote my first books: 31 Days to Change Your Life, the Adventures of Mexi the Boat Dog series, and a few recipe books thrown in for good measure.
I even ended up on TV—not once, but twice! First in the audience of Question Time, and then in Narrow Escapes, which was such a fantastic experience (and let’s face it, the best boating TV show out there, if you ask me!).
Mexi, our gorgeous Lakeland cross-terrier, bounded into our lives and changed everything. She’s cheeky, adorable, and such a special part of our little floating family.
And then—there’s the running.
Only two years ago, after many stop-start attempts, I properly took up running. Since then, I’ve completed the Virtual London Marathon, the Shakespeare Half Marathon, and the Keighley 10K. Proof that age is never an excuse—not to try, not to push, not to thrive.
We’ve also been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places: Mexico, Cuba, Zante—and my personal favourite, Thailand.
So as I step into my sixtieth decade, I feel grateful, hopeful, and ready.
This year, I plan to publish two more books. I’ll keep cruising the cut, exploring the world, and making memories with Steve and Mexi. But one big change I am making? I’m choosing to spend time only with people who bring me joy. No more energy wasted on what drains or dulls.
Here’s to a new decade—with more love, more laughter, and more living.
